| | | | Creator: | Giddings, Calvin | | | | Dates: | 1830-1866 | | | | Abstract: | Calvin Giddings (1796-1875) was a farmer and resident of Rockport Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Born in New York, he married Mary Bennet in Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1821. In 1826, he purchased land in Rockport Township from George Peak Jr. in what is now Rocky River, Ohio. In addition to farming, beginning in 1829 Giddings ran a wool carding business in Rockport Township. The farmers of Rockport Township nominated him as a candidate for the office of Sheriff of Cuyahoga County in 1838. The census of 1850 lists him as owning a substantial farm in Rockport Township. While his son Chauncy Giddings is listed as a resident of Rockport Township in the 1860 census, there is no entry for Calvin. By the 1870 census, Calvin Giddings was living in Erie County, Ohio. He died April 4, 1875, and is buried, along with his wife, Mary and several children, in the Fairview Park (Rockport) Cemetery, Fairview Park, Ohio. | | | | Creator: | Fitch Family | | | | Dates: | 1800-1907 | | | | Abstract: | The Fitch family was a prominent family in nineteenth century Ashtabula County, Ohio. Two of the most notable family members were Orramel and Edward Fitch. Orramel H. Fitch (1803-1882), was a resident of Ashtabula County, Ohio. There he was elected to represent the county in the State Legislature. He served as county prosecuting attorney in 1841 and 1842. Six years later, he helped to organize the Farmer's Bank of Ashtabula County. Mr. Fitch was also instrumental in the writing of The Williams Brothers' History of Ashtabula County in 1878. Edward Hubbard Fitch (1837-1897) was the son of Orramel H. Fitch (1803-1882). In 1869 Mr. Fitch was elected to the State legislature. Edward Fitch was a lawyer by profession. He served as the local justice of the peace and as county prosecuting attorney like his father has before him.
